What is irc?: irc is a real-time chat client. All instant messaging softare are based on irc. You can type messages to other users in real time, and they can do the same with you. How does it work?: much like web browsing, irc requires a client, ie, a program that can communicate with an irc server. The most popular downloadable irc clients are mirc (for the PC) and ircle (for the mac). Both can be gotten at download.com And, so, how does it work?: you connect to an irc SERVER (which you define in your client). Within each server are channels. All channels start with a "#" in their name. (If you're a Myth player, a channel is much like a room.) To access the #marathon channel, you need to set your irc server to irc.utchat.com. Then type (without quotes) "join #marathon" once connected. You will see a welcome message, and a list of people currently online. If you own a copy of Unreal Tournament, then simply use the Multiplayer->find internet games -> click on the Chat tab, then enter the irc server and channel. If you don't own UT, you should, so you can download Marathon Resurrection and online against us. To run UT, you'll probably need a G3 400 or so, and a graphics card (8 megs is a healthy minimum). You can get used copies for about 20 or less, and yes, it's available for the mac and the pc. Nevertheless, you don't need UT to connect to #marathon. Either mirc or ircle will do just fine.
