My guess is the W'rkncacnter. The only time we actually "see" the W'rkncacnter, or rather the effects of its release, is in the secret levels reached through the dream levels. This is possibly what the riddle refers to as "vengeful dreams". Further, the only time that the mentor, Durandal, is truly dead, as opposed to downloaded by the Pfhor or downloaded into a chip, is when the W'rkncacnter is released. And the W'rkncacnter appears everywhere in all time lines but the final one and is probably responsible for the marine's time shifting as well; thus it is everywhere, but seen only in the vengeful dreams. It's just a thought.
