In Response To: Re: What kind of Chemical freak designed the MARAH (SiliconDream =PN=) : The Marathon actually wouldn't have a noticeable gravitational field, even
True. : I suppose it could be some sort of Star Trek-style artificial gravity, but
Really? I would have gathered just the opposite. Keep in mind that centrifugal gravity is also artificial. : So I think the Marathon's probably just spinning
Not only that, but the gravity would be strongest at the equator and would be off-angle elsewhere. True, Phoebos (sp?) is oblong, as is the Marathon. Does anyone know the dimensions of the Marathon? It would be interesting to calculate the required rotation frequency to produce anything approaching 1G. I once read that centrifugal pseudogravity is inherently problematic, as rotation speeds would be sufficiently high to cause dizziness, nausea and vomiting. When we see the Marathon in M1, it isn't spinning. True, it's been disabled, but then the game would occur in zero G. More likely this is a limitation of the M1 engine. On the other hand, if humans could develop the technology for transport, then surely they could develop artificial gravity. : Hey, just thought of something...in transit, the Marathon's accelerating
That's actually an excellent idea. Marathon certainly doesn't look like it was designed this way, but maybe the colonists have been gradually modifying it since arrival at Tau Ceti. Why use artificial gravity when acceleration will produce pseudogravity in an of itself. In fact, the problem with long distance space travel is not microgravity but hypergravity, as the time of travel could be cut dramatically by accelerating and then decelerating continuously at values greater than Earth's gravitational acceleration. |
