We all know the Marathon marine is a Mjolnir Mark IV cyborg. In found this on the Star Wars Databank, regarding the Astro-droids; R2D2 belong to this class:
"...Droid manufacturing giant Industrial Automaton has all but cornered the astromech droid market with their immensely successful R-series..."
Here comes the good part:
"...Industrial Automaton recycled body shells of their old Mark II reactor drones to produce the R1 series, a stopgap measure that allowed them to have a new droid on the market..."
The phrase "recycled body shells" makes me think of two things that are very Marathon: the History of the Battleroids and "A shelf of it's former self" (though I don't recall where I read this on the Story Page). And what about those Mark II reactor drones?
