Yeah, Marathon uses pictures and bitmaps stored in memory and they get drawn on screen when needed. Sometimes they are in sequence to make an animation, like when the assault rifle gets fired, a sequence for the firing gets drawn on-screen to show the heat and movement (but not at a high framerate). Sprites can also be made for 3D looking objects; Within Marathon, the certain angle of the monster compared to the viewer will give an angle for the sprite needed for that image of the monster, which was better than some of the older games because they only used one angle (always facing the player, because they are only attacking the player - not realistic).
