In Response To: Hindmost Creche (Alfred Mordeir)

From Dictionary.com

hindmost adj : located farthest to the rear

creche \Cr[`e]che\ (kr[asl]sh), n. [F.] A public nursery, where the young children of poor women are cared for during the day, while their mothers are at work.
-or-
creche n 1: an institution where infant children of unknown parents are taken in and cared for

:::

So, a reasonable translation could be ‘rear nursery’. But what does that mean? What is the Hindmost Creche. Tfear calls it ‘Her’, implying that the Hindmost Creche is a biological entity with it’s own identity. An identity which is vast and all-knowing.

Now, we know the Pfhor to be slavers, subjugating entire races and planets in their path. But what is done with these slaves? We know of two races that are not enslaved by the Pfhor, yet neither of them are the Pfhor’s ‘customers’: the Jjaro and humans. That is, all races that have come into contact with the Pfhor are either annihilated or enslaved. So, it would seem that the slaves are used by the Pfhor and the Hindmost Creche, and the Pfhor serve the Hindmost.

So what is the Hindmost? From Tfear’s quote: “The Hindmost is of an intelligence so vast, it encompasses the span of the Pfhor, and to those privilege to serve Her, appears insane.”

The Hindmost may be a God, a Jjaro, a W’rknacacnter, an AI, or something else entirely.

Time to eliminate:
God? I don’t think so. Why would a God need slaves? (Think Star Trek: Why does God need a starship?)

Jjaro? Doubt it, a lot. We know the Jjaro rarely pop up. They intervened in PiD, created the S’pht, left a lot of technology around, and then disappeared. I don’t see a Jjaro taking such an active role in the actions of the ‘lesser races’. Plus I think that they are VERY far away, after all, it took Durandal 10000 years or so to find one of their ships...and he could have just found it abandoned, we just don’t know.

A W’rknacacnter? No. I understand them to be chaotic, violent creatures that wouldn’t be interested in controlling races.

An AI? Well, you can call and AI (which is sexless) ‘her’ as we did with Leela. But, we know that none of the Pfhor had never known complex AIs.

“All late-model Pfhor personality constructs were based on sixty-four billion exobyte images of Tycho's core, taken during the years he was on the Pfhor homeworld between 2795 and 2801 AD. Though never as intelligent or useful as one of the Marathon's original three AIs, these machines helped the Pfhor delay their inevitable defeat by the S'pht for over fifty years. Many of these crippled clones of Tycho still exist today on old Pfhor colony worlds.”

The Hindmost may be an AI, after all the quote goes something like: “Any sufficiently advanced technology will be indistiguishible from magic.” The Hindmost may be an AI so complex that it seems to be a biological entity. But, if it was so complex and intelligent, and the Pfhor served it, it should have made the Pfhor’s destruction impossible.

I think that all of this leads us to believe that the Hindmost Creche is some kind of Queen of the Pfhor. All the Pfhor we know are drones, some more intelligent than others.

This definition would fit what the name implies: rear nursery. The Hindmost stays behind and keeps a supply of Pfhor eggs popping out. We learned that they hatch from eggs in Marathon during “Ain’t Got Time Pfhor This...”. And like ants and bees, they all serve the Queen, directly or indirectly, with a complex, caste-like system, which is exactly what the Pfhor have. (Attentive Class, etc.)

The Covenant on the other hand, seems to be a group of races, allied with the purpose of destroying humanity. Unlike Pfhor slavers.
