Tempus Irae: Haven't Killed Anything/KGM-365

I Haven't Killed Anything Since 1485, the third level in the trip to the Pfhor ship, has less to do than the previous two, but is just as easy on the eyes. The level is quite short to walk through, but contains almost 850 polygons, so it has a tremendous amount of detail. The most commonly used trick on this level is careful placement of textures with varied lighting effects (an expenditure of collection space that only became feasible with TI's expanded sets), which produces some very nice effects equivalent to those that can be done with a moden engine that does "real" lighting.

On your way to the end, you pass 2 corridors whose lights will flicker on if they are entered. At the end of the south corridor is a room containing 3 drones, the only combat you will see on this level.

The crown jewel of this level is the decompressing Enforcers, which was quite a trick for its time and remains impressive today. In hindsight, the complex technique documented in the spoiler guide could have been made a good bit simpler by removing its redundancies (for one thing, the target monsters could have been removed, and the platforms relied upon to set off the "explosives". And the masking of the teleportation was not strictly necessary, as the monsters would not have had any problem waiting forever for their doors to open). In the original TI 1.0, the Enforcers did not have a custom death sequence, and their corpses would fall onto the invisible floor between the stations; 1.1 gives them a redone sequence that lets them simply disintegrate. This may be the most advanced Marathon trick outside of novelty maps or "hardcore" gimmick scenarios like Missed Island or Operation Vengeance, and it's a great reward for getting through the previous three levels.

Next, we get blasted out of the ship and teleported to the S'pht sickbay, in KGM-365 by way of the last chapter, Hostile. There, the S'pht fill us in on the past few weeks, while the Pfhor have been building a large structure around the last manuscript. It's unclear what the Pfhor expect to accomplish at this point, now that their ship has been destroyed. Perhaps they are just being difficult and trying to impede your progress out of boredom :P
