I just saw it and I think you're talking about the Oberon wreckage(Calima) and M2's Durandal chapter screen. I don't know, the ruins of a space ship that crashed on the dessert is a cliché of scifi stories. A good team of designers can come out with an image similar to Mullin's illustration without looking at his work. After all, Mullins is a great illustrator, but he's not an influence on the media.
