Any of you ever played the Mac game "Ares"? It was a project started by a guy named Nathan Lamont, and published by Changeling. It's a top-down spaceflight/strategy game, kind of like Ambrosia's Escape Velocity trilogy. (Ambrosia now publishes Ares too-Changeling must have gone bottom-up.)
Anyway, the game's storyline has a few things that remind me of Marathon: the idea is that it's the player (commander of an exploration spaceship, sent on a "first contact" mission to meet an alien race called Ishimans. When they arrive, the Ishimans inform them that Earth has fallen to the Canthran Order (=Pfhor?), a race of aliens who are taking over every planet in sight. The human explorers, using ships donated by the Ishimans (=S'pht'Kr?), begin a counter-strike against the Canthrans.
Maybe not much of a connection, but much of the game's graphics were done by "J." Reg. Dujour, who also created most of the graphics in Marathon.
And we all know what Bungie fans the people at Ambrosia are...
