My theory about how the Marathon's engines work
Posted By: Rebel ShuttleDate: 9/16/03 7:52 p.m.

I think the Marathon's engines are fusion ramjets. I got a magazine about 2 months ago talking about to concept rockets and one of them was a fusion ramjet. It uses a huge magnet to create a magnetic maw 10s of 1,000s miles in diameter. The funnel scoops up intersteller hydrogen and dumps it into the reacter as fuel. Without fuel tanks to weigh it down the fusion ramjet could approach the speed of light. One problem with it however is drag. The fusion particles shove the ship forward but the intersteller hydrogen piling at the front acts to slow it down. I also find it interesting that the person who concieved of this was Robert Bussard in 1960.
