In Response To: Volunteers: Strange Aeons (Mark Levin)

: Lh'owon is riddled with the Jjaro technology that makes up the ancient
: S'pht AI Thoth. His personality cells are scattered across the planet; we
: encountered 6 of them in Marathon 2 and 1 in MI (How many is that so
: far? :P) But at the critical location, the place indicated by the S'pht
: poem Durandal found, is this room. It features an unprecedented four
: personality cells, and a fifth area, with an uplink slot. How the S'pht
: knew that this day would come may never be known, but the Marine
: has something for Thoth and he has found the means to get it there.

: In the middle west pool in the main room is an uplink chip. Exactly how
: it got there is a story for another day :) (we may have to chalk this up
: to gameplay, since there was no way for the player to keep the chip
: through a Rebellion level). Then you just have to jump around in
: Thoth'sbrain until you reach the uplink point. Stick in the chip, and
: Thoth isfinally completely alive. We'll never know exactly what
: Durandaland Thoth talked about, but when we get back to the
: terminal K'lia is returning, along with the legendary S'pht elder S'bhuth.
: Time to go back upstairs...

Something interesting just dawned on me about this level. Take a look at the final terminal (scroll down to Termianl 0, Message 2) that you read before going on to Bagged Again. To quote, "The graven image stirs, we are whole again." It does not say that they are a new entitiy - Durandal/Thoth - it says that they are whole again, implying that they were together in the past and have been rejoined. This has very interesting implications. Very interesting. To me it confirms that Durandal is built upon Jjaro technology. There is something that is a part of Durandal - something in his primal pattern that the player carried from Hang Brain - that is Jjaro in origin and very ancient. Something that was once part of a larger Jjaro whole. It also tells me that Thoth is of Jjaro origin - not S'pht as has previously been implied. They were once both a part of a whole, and they have been rejoined into that same whole. Think about the implications of this. Durandal may have been rampant, but his purpose may have been determined thousands of years before, and it had nothing to do with the closure of the universe.

Perhaps the Jjaro even seeded the galaxy with multiple primal patterns that used to be a part of Thoth. They were leaving the galaxy and recognized the power they left behind would be dangerous indeed in the wrong hands. By splitting Thoth and deactivating him, they kept the ancient power in check and the Pfhor had much less to gain. But each Durandal-type primal pattern was there with a specific purpose layed out - when activated by whatever species came upon it - in this case human - to seek out the S'pht, to save them from any that would harm them and to insure that the W'rkncacnter was never released, reuniting with Thoth if necessary. Interesting indeed . . .
