MIDA and Marathon

We've known that MIDA, the Martian Rebels, have had "a reputation for long-term planning", yet their plans for rebellion on Mars failed because they failed to plan *for* the long term. And, as many historians note, they failed to take over the Marathon, which even in it's half-complete condition would have made a formidable defense platform.

But, what if MIDA's goal wasn't Mars? From all the information that is in Marathon, there was no way that Mars could truly be "independent" as a nation, since it was heavily dependent on imports from Earth. What the imports were is unknown, but is most likely highly-advanced electronics and similar hardware-and these are vital to the survival of the Mars colony. Without them, Mars would soon fall apart.

But, right above them, was the Marathon-and salvation for the MIDA hard-core membership. It was designed to carry everything needed to take colonists from Earth to Tau Ceti on a one-way trip, and there would be NO resupply or such from Earth once the Marathon had left the Solar System. And, while the supplies on the Marathon couldn't save Mars, it could save the core of the MIDA membership.

The plan, I think was this-
1)MIDA forments a "revolt", hiding behind a shell group that calls itself MIDA to create a full-on revolution on Mars. Carefully, the revolution has internal flaws and avoids harming the Marathon.

2)When the false-MIDA is supressed, the MIDA core membership (which would have included Bernaud Strauss, the creator of DURANDAL) buries it's involvement and uses the confusion and chaos to hide weapons aboard the Marathon. Durandal is prepared as a "controlled-Rampant" AI, to seize control from Tycho and Leela when the time is right.

3)MIDA members are chosen as part of the colonists, all places into cryogenic suspension for the trip to Tau Ceti.

If the Phfor hadn't attacked, what would have happend is that the MIDA membership on-board the Marathon would have seized control of the colony, using the 10 Mjolnar cyborgs as heavy-weapons to supress anybody non-MIDA in cryosleep and the BoBs. Essentually, MIDA would have "won" the revolution, and be beyond Earth's retribution.

It doesn't explain everything that happened before the Phftor attacked, but it does explain a LOT.
