Marathon references from the author of "Dune"

Has anyone read Destination: Void by Frank Herbert? Its bursting at the seams with similarities to marathon:

There is an egg shaped colony ship bound for Tau Ceti, carrying about 3000 colonists, Trouble strikes as the three Organic Mental Cores (think "Krang from the ninja turtles, but without the robotics) go crazy and have to be killed. The story then focuses on the crews efforts to create an "artificial consciousness"

There's lots of stuff about balance and dreams, and "rouge consciousness" and the end is suspiciously similar to the end of infinity...

good book anyhoo

worth a read
