m1: Habe Quiddam problem

so i've found an old copy of marathon and decided to replay it. i've made it to the end of Habe Quiddam and all i have to do is get the alien weapon that is in the lava pit. i know how to do this, my problem is that i can't pick it up. I've gone in the pit, ran over the object but i never pick it up. i always die in there and it usually ends up floating in front of my face. This sounds like a bug of sorts, but i can't figure it out. I've tried to get the item about 10 times with no luck. I began playing 1.0, upgraded to 1.2 and have searched the net. I am using a non-bungie physics module, but i've no idea where the orignal is, but can't say i expect that to be the root cause. I can't get past this part of Habe Quiddam. I want to avoid reinstalling marathon because i no longer have the disk or the serial number.

has anyone seen this before, and can you suggest a fix?
