Chinese and Egyptian characters are not fundamentally based on sounds like ours, but they *can* be pronounced, and this is the basis for their Romanized versions. Remember, I'm not talking about translating to English here. You can translate something with no spoken form to English, but you can't simply convert it to Roman characters.
