In Response To: S'Pht Numbers (Steve Levinson) I hate to reply to my own post, but I had another thought about S'Pht numbers and counting. When we count on our fingers, we count one finger at a time, giving us 10 digits as the base for our number system. The S'Pht seem to have 3 "fingers" on each "hand", which I assumed would suggest a base 6 numbering system. But what if they count on their fingers in a binary fashion, using combinations of fingers. They then might have a base 8 system if they count with one hand, or base 64 if using both hands. A case for a base 6 or 12 numbering system could be made, however, based on practicality. Our base 10 system doesn't handle thirds well at all, and multiples of the prime numbers 2 and 3 are much more common than 5. After all, even we have chosen to split our days and nights into 12 hours each and our circles into 360 degrees. |
