In Response To: Re: Why don’t we make a contest for this instead? (goran) : If you have problems running AO turn off the 3d stuff and it will
Absolutely right. That's exactly what I do with my old beige G3 - it's not nearly as nice without the OpenGL effects that I can get on my Ti G4, but it is every bit as playable as Infinity, plus the carbon version runs native under OS X! : crashes? what are you talking about? Alephone has never caused
Oh, I can assure you, Goran, that AO can and does crash, particularly with maps that are not compatible. TC19 is a good example - there are a couple of spots in the scenario where a crash is guaranteed. Personally, I believe that it is unacceptable to generate a map today that isn't compatible under both the Infinity and AO engines, but then, I'm not a map maker ;-) . There is also an OpenGL crash that is incredibly nasty - it actually freezes the computer, even under OS X, which isn't supposed to happen. This is well documented and there are warnings in the AO manual about how to recognize it before it happens and to reload the OpenGL textures. Still, I'd rather play AO carbon under OS X than fiddle with the classic environment. And crashes are still less frequent than with Infinity, which can and does crash with some 3rd party maps, too. : mapmakers please update yourselves to the time we live in. Oh, you mean that everyone should start porting their maps to use the UT engine ;-) . Now that the M:R demo is out, I guess I'm going to have to buy a copy. Any suggestions on who has the best price? |
