In Response To: Re: Eight thousand + lines of dialog (Heady)

: After reading that bit, I was more under the impression that Matt was
: refering to phrases to be pronounced in battle situations (e.g.
: "Retreat!", "I'm out of ammo!", "Hm, so, do you
: guys speak English?" etc.), and not anything related to communicating
: the storyline.

Sort of like what the Bobs say in the Marathon series; they have these possible types of sounds:

Waking up (5)
Random chatter (4)
Got hit (2)
Friendly-fire apology (4)
Out of my way! (3)
Stop shooting me! (4)
Kill the player! (3)
Triumph (3)
Departing (5)
Dying (2)
Dying in flames (1)

In the ()'s are how many of each type of sound. There are 11 of each type of sound, each of which has as many as 5 sounds associated with it. However, Halo will have about 8000 sounds with 160 sounds per AI unit, implying 50 different AI units. And a Marathon-like number of sound types implies 15 sounds per type.

The sheer bulk is also worth noting; at 1 second/sound, the dialogue comes out to be about 2 hours of sound.

To me, that seems grandiose in the extreme -- what's the point of going to such extremes?

Of course, this could be a misstatement -- that 7000-8000 figure could be for *all* the sounds in Halo, instead of spoken-dialogue sounds.
