It's not all that bad. I didn't even own Marathon 1 until a year or two ago, and now it's my favorite set of games! Old doesn't mean bad. Just look at the PT Cruiser! The hottest-selling car in the US, and it looks like something out of the 1930's. (Did you know that it comes with a case of bootleg whiskey and a tommy gun? Gun ports optional)

I would certainly play Halo in favor of many other contemporary games because you can't beat Bungie's quality and innovation (even Marathon is still WAY too cool) and the Bungieverse is coherent -- everything fits with everything else (except -- uhhh, Abuse). Even Oni gives us some background on Marathon projects that came several hundred years later. It's a living world of myth and adventure. It appeals to intellectuals. The 6-copies-per-minute-per-year of Halo sold is just the masses of hangers-on of the Powerful Vortex of the Kischty Mac Users.
