Actually, there's a bit of history behind this, and it's not pretty. It seems that Microsoft's original multimedia codecs contained questionable quicktime code. As I recall it, this wasn't a deliberate issue of copyright violation, but there was a 3rd party involved that had been involved in the development of code for both platforms. As Apple held the copyright, they pushed the issue, I think expecting MS to license the technology or at least remove the plagered code. Instead, Bill Gates in typical fashion took his company in another direction and made the standard proprietary, rather than incorporating existing open standards. Sound familiar?
