I'd like to add that it wasn't even a competition at first - it was just page decoration, added by Mike Watson (who designed the front page). When enough folks started asking what the code was, we decided wed give away a PID box to the first person to figure it out.

The glyphs, on the other hand, were meticulously planned from day 1. :)
