Oni Deadly Brain Scene *Complete*
Posted By: MannonDate: 4/15/02 12:14 a.m.

The old "frogblast *OT*" (link below) thread was getting unweildly, and many may have entirely skipped the other Oni stuff so I decided to start a new thread. Well, that and having missed the first exchange messed everything up, as well as putting everything in different places... ect...

I brought the whole thing together, formatted it a bit nicer, and here's what you get.

For those of you just tuning in at the end of the second level in Oni there is a human brain/computer thingy that you have to shut down. Why is this interesting? Well, to start off there's a Marathon reference in the scene. There's also a reference to Stanley Kubrick's 2001. [Interesting trivia, Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick cowrote the novel which would serve as the basis for the screenplay for the movie. In their agreement Clarke would get credit for the book and Kubric credit for the screenplay and movie that would follow. Kubrick went on to make MANY changes while writing the screenplay. Some notable examples are: the ship only passed Jupiter on a slingshot trajectory to Saturn instead, the monoliths were translucent instead of black, the end depicted a journey through an alien transportation system (similar to Carl Sagan's Contact) and ended in a rendition of human living space based on intercepted tv broadcasts and not quite accurate. Clarke said that that was his interpretation of the ending, and that Kubrick never did elaborate on it. *grin* Okay so this little foray was pointless, but Kubrick and Clarke are my IDOLS! And, they aren't underappreciated at Bungie either.]

This all got started because the brain makes some grunting noises a couple of times but if you turn on subtitles it also displays some "semicoherent" text. (I'm borrowing that VERY appropriate description of the text from Tru7h.) It's an interesting read, really... It's Bungie, and at least partially related to Marathon, so... heh

Okay so without any further delay... on with the show. (I've included links to screenshots of all the text below each line of text, and at the end is a GIF of all the text cropped into a single image.)

[Triggered before You Complete the First Sequence... (And, before the save point... darnit!)]

Shinatama: I've interfaced with the Deadly Brain.

Shinatama: It's broken out of the Musashi intranet, and is trying to gain access to the local TCTF Public Security Node.

Shinatama: Turn off those breakers...Fast!

Deadly Brain: Am I the Pacific Brain? The Doltish, Shallow-Pated or Hebetudinous Brain? Indeed not. I am the Deadly Brain! Deadly, I say! You haven't a chance.

[Triggered after You Complete the First Sequence...]

Shinatama: Unfortunately, the Brain's subconscious is attempting to crash the Public News Net. Something about "the glory of instant celebrity."

Shinatama: Ugh! It's unleasing a torrent of digital images of itself! Stop it!
http://www.mannon.netfirms.com/GoneRampant1.jpg

Deadly Brain: Who can resist my subtle charm, my rakish lobes? No one! The world is my oyster, and I...I am the public's pearl.

[Triggered after You Complete the Second Sequence.]

Shinatama: You must have decoupled its core logic on that final pass. The Brain tells me it will irradiate everything within a 50 block radius unless we meet the following demands: it wants feet.
http://www.mannon.netfirms.com/GoneRampant3.jpg

Shinatama: Clearly it's gone rampant, but it's Xiox destuct mechanizm is extremely powerful. Complete the final sequence, and shut that Brain off for good!
http://www.mannon.netfirms.com/GoneRampant4.jpg

Deadly Brain: I am a Brain. Hath not a Brain feet? Hath not a Brain hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do...

[Completing the third sequence triggers the end of level cinamatic.]

There was also an amusing exchange about this with some other interesting tidbits started as a post by Tru7h in the old thread. I won't copy it to this thread, but here's a link if you missed it and wanna see.
