i've never played marathon until now, and wanted to share a bit. hope it's alright for a newbie to make a new post, i'm not too familiar with this kind of forum layout, so sorry if i make any mistakes.
i'm copying some of what i wrote in another forum:
After having replayed Halo MCC (since everyone has been talking about Cemake) and having watched some videos by a guy on youtube named Fenrick, I felt an itch to play Marathon, which I've never done. I played a bit, then replayed Pillar of Autumn and was instantly struck by how the maintenance corridors in that level reminded me of the little maze section near the end of Marathon's first level, Arrival. I've played some more Marathon, and I'm really enjoying it so far. The mazey design gets irritating on occasion, but being able to enable a map overlay and use a more modern HUD has been helpful. I'd say the combat gameplay feels basic, but like, a really solid kind of basic? It just feels good to fight in this game, in a way that I think Bungie was always good at capturing.
I think what's stuck with me so far though was a terminal in Never Burn Money (not the White terminal, since I'd read that one a while ago online), the other one that starts with "%%%here was nothing to be gained from hesitation now%&^)}:>", it just struck me for some reason. And then in Cool Fusion, there's the rectangular room where you have to drop down. I was showing a friend of mine the game and I was talking about the gameplay feeling basic but fun because the devs knew how to stretch things; just as I dropped down in the room while talking, I got ambushed by a whole bunch of enemies and I panicked. I've since gotten to G4 Sunbathing and I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off as I try to find the switches to hit as my air runs out.
Wonderful game so far.
