I'm sure they actually exist as spaces in universe, even though their purpose is unlcear from a wattsonian perspective.
The more interesting question is if the few maps that take place on boomer in Eternal or (other third party scenarios(but i don't think there's any other scenarios using the setting(and i think eternal only had one failure map on it? and its still unclear if its actually boomer you were teleported to but it probably is))) are canon.
