Hi Nicholai,
Yes, I know what you mean. It’s ‘Marathon Freedom’, by CubicCircle! It’s actually a standalone game, written in Unity, but based around playing various different characters in the Marathon universe, in different settings. It’s a 2.5D engine, and you view the levels from above. The game brings in RPG elements, as you remembered – so you gain experience as you successfully complete levels, which you can spend on a variety of upgrades to make your life easier, and help you deal with harder difficulties.
I don’t think it was ever fully finished, but what exists stands very nicely on its own. I’ve played it a fair bit, and I think it’s really rather good! I’d encourage people to try it out if they don’t know it!
You can still download versions of it for Mac and Windows on Simplici7y:

Just be aware that the Mac version is old now, and won’t work on modern systems. I just verified that myself! So you’d need to do some emulation (and it’s possible the Windows version might be easier to get started on Mac systems these days – a pity!).
Curiously, the version number on Simplici7y is 0.36, which I have, but I also have an updated version with version number 0.47 – but just for the Mac. I don’t recall what that version added, but I think it might have been at least an extra level at the end. I’m not sure it’s available online any more. Would you like to see it? Or should I upload that somewhere, for posterity?
