The hypothetical Marathon engine

What about a hypothetical universe where Bungie decided to make the Quake destroyer Marathon 3D engine?
I can guess how the engine could work, but can it be created in this universe?
It could be that in the hypothetical universe I am playing Marathon 3D right now or I am unable to as some kind of joke.
