: Oh wow, I did necro pretty bad didn't I? The whole of the 2020s have felt
: like one long year to me.

: In any case, my relation to doom and marathon is backwards to your
: experience. I wanna say in around 07 or 08, I was getting into Linux
: through my studies and got exposed to a lot of open source stuff. I think
: I discovered aleph one through the open source community (it used to pop
: up on "top open source games" type lists often) and decided to
: give it a spin since I had a lot of buddies who were hardcore halo nerds.
: Really got into reading the story page around then too. Like I'd sit there
: in my dorm all night reading "facts and curious things about..."
: on a little old nokia phone.

: Tried mapping a little, but back then the only thing I could get working was
: map editor one, which I just couldn't get the hang of. Pretty sure most of
: the interface was in japanese too, so it was pretty difficult lol.

: Doom came a lot later. I think I got into it through seeing Samsara in around
: 2014, which lets you play as the Marathon Security Officer in doom. From
: there, I started trying to make marathon themed maps in doom and learned
: how that process works. Kinda just spiralled from there and learned how to
: mod doom.

: Then I stopped caring for a decade and then suddenly got back into doom for
: some reason and then ended up also getting back into marathon and learned
: how to use like weland and such.

It's not that much backwards. Being a mac kid, obviously doom shareware disks wasn't a thing I got to see, but the marathon demo was like our store-brand not-coca cola alternative. I relate so much to reading the story forum in my college dorm, and having to make do with a little linux box I got as a door-prize because my other computers crapped out. And I'm glad for it because ubuntu is quite an experience.

And sadly I use the word 'computers' plural because the big chonky 2000s imac i had to leave home had died from underuse by the time i went back to my dad's house.

Before zdoom and doombuilder 2 existed the most editing I'd done was attempts at vanilla hexen maps. Zdoom opened pandora's box for all the disgusting realm667 nightmare creatures, but I remember the wads celebrating the new capabilities at the time were pretty fun and magical. Then by the 2010's doom just got oversatturated, hexen mapping was nearly dead but got a last hurrah with Serpent Resurrection an Scourge of Viscerus, but aleph one marathon scenarios stayed relevant without too much quantity over quality (though there is some weird stuff if you go looking in simplici7y for things like Marathon Sucks and Los Disneys).

I feel like Aleph One could be doing more to keep up with all the bells and whistles of Gzdoom and whatever you use to play Build games, but then at what point would the engine lose its flavor and become just another gzdoom or unity clone? Well, the things it does have seem pretty unreplicable without a lot of work, like how you can make netgame rooms in an already running instance of the game the way it does before launching, the 5d polygon maps, its terminals, the weird physics, etc.
