Not strictly true. At the very end of Marathon you experience a teleport out affect. In the Marathon Official Strategy Guide Interview Jason Jones remarked:

Agreed. Marathon Infinity was never designed to be a sequel to Marathon 2. Marathon 3 was. Sadly we don't know what the plot treated was. There are some clues about a rogue star and another ruined world, far from the galactic core. Marathon Infinity was hampered by a low budget and an initially short development timeline. It was original designed to use only the Marathon 2 assets. So essentially a scenario. Hats off the Greg Kirkpatrick and the Double Aught crew for creating a genuinely intriguing Joycean-like experience. So that even after 25 years we are still trying to understand it. Cheers
