Your suggested path is what Aperturegrillz takes in his speedrun, so you're almost certainly correct that that's the fastest route. He doesn't even bother going to get the gold though, he just steps into Beware of Low-Flying Nightmares and right back out.
Probably the "best" route depends on your goals. If you used the secret on Happy Happy, Carnage Carnage, you'll want to go through Feel the Power to get your body count up, and get the extra gold there, since you would have skipped that level on the way down.
