Half Life had its moments too, though I was never scared by things like blood and gibs. (we had the parental lock turned off cause the game sucked otherwise) but the tentacles, Gargantua and Xen are good contenders. The "electrified toxic waste" area, reveal of Race X and fire pipes in Opposing Force also. Most certainly the Golden 6 Tomb Raider games as well, though 5+6 were 2000s games.

Marathon 2 did lose the deliberate horror aspects of the first game but Infinity brought them right back again to even greater effect.
