Not really sure what you mean by this. The map text is "canon" because it was put into the map by a developer (Greg Kirkpatrick). Of course Marathon fans could not have seen this until they developed the technology to read Marathon maps. I like to think of it as a nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Until mankind developed space travel they could not find the Monolith on the moon.
