Meta-wise, probably to save time (and system memory) on sprite-making. In-universe, not all of Durandal's BoBs had much combat training before this, so maybe he didn't trust them with the higher-grade weapons.

Anyway, the "your battleship" line amuses me with its unintentional implication that the SO is already some kinda space merc (you can't tell me that he and Durandal didn't essentially become these after M2).
