It was to hide the lack of atmosphere *rimshot*
By that, I mean M1 didn't really have much in the way of skyboxes (just that space texture) and nothing but metallic spaceship stuff.
The story is really unclear in my memory, maybe the captain and folks abandoned ship in that timeline.
