it wasn't being sold: it was freeware on the store as well. Still is on the ios Aleph One versions, except the latter ones have exactly 3 microtransactions:

1 for a dumbed down HD texture mode

1 for Aleph One/XBLA crosshairs

1 for a Master Chief mode which is basically a cheater mode: you can toggle touch switches for all weapons, start on any level including secret and/or otherwise inaccessible ones, refill health and both levels of shield etc. I never use it unless I'm trying to reach a near impossible to get to secret.

If OSX couldn't support the originals, I think the app store ones might have been either emulating or were ports of A1 like the ios ones, I can't tell as they've gone now.
