Except you can't brake very well when running and more often slide into pits or overshoot and undershoot jumps more. I found that out from Mario 2 (the Lost Levels).

Except I think the ball holder is kept from running so I don't think that works. I've only tried the Halo version, and the "driving range" Grifball.
