I guess, going by that theory, that the leg bone makes up the actual pipes and mouthpiece of the instrument. If it was a trombone (ha ha), the fibula would be where the slider would go.
I thought the pipes were made of brass like the Ground Floor German said. (alloy-reinforced bone perhaps?)
