That raises the question, how much do we know of Tycho's experiences between Marathon and M2? I always took Tycho's tone in the first game as a pre-rampant moral outrage at Durandal's betrayal, not the start of Anger. That would leave plenty of time between games to go through Melancholia.

If Tycho did sulk for a good portion of those seventeen years, it might explain why Durandal was left in relative peace until he reached Lh'owon. It's hard to imagine an angry Tycho not manipulating the Pfhor bureaucracy into dogging Durandal harder, and confronting him before he gets so close to his goal.

I agree Tycho's rampancy feels stronger in Infinity. The scenery-chewing fits Infinity's artsy style (and he gets more screen time to show it), but for some timelines there's also a significant in-universe difference: the Pfhor had captured the SO. Perhaps the Pfhor allocated Tycho more computing resources to "study" this asset, and inadvertently hastened his progression through the stages of rampancy.

As to whether Tycho is more messed up than your average rampant AI, I'm not sure we have enough data to say. Our examples are Durandal, Tycho, and two vague accounts of planetary-scale network takeover. Is Tycho exceptionally unstable, or is Durandal exceptionally sane? Durandal has a goal of sufficient ambition and complexity to give his overgrown mind purpose, so perhaps he keeps his destructive impulses in better check.
