Now there's an explanation for why there's no manuscript in Venice: the guy delivering it was stuck here! (killed by the pfhor?)

So the s'pht understood from the message in Brain Damage that you needed to find that venitian thief, going directly to Venice is the secret level, and when you don't find it, the s'pht figure out where the manuscript got held up and send you to the gauntlet? But you have the more obvious option of going directly to Gauntlet from Brain Damage, so they already knew that? S'pht information technology is weird.
