to add to this, Muller must've found the Gold Key on Ascension or one of the upper levels. The Germans split up on Ground Floor, with Walter and his partner going down to Feel the Power in search of the Cedar Box and gold, since it's reported that no one came back up (this also means that Muller knew approximately where the Cedar Box and Gold Door were).

It's clear that while Muller may have had a bad character, he wasn't an idiot. His only (and critical) mistake was underestimating the monsters of the Dreaming God.

I'd also like to add that the "flaming smokey dude" must be the Demon from the glass vial.

I still don't understand the bit about the missing MP41, though.
