"Gray" tends to be the American spelling while "grey" is British, but I've always personally seen them as different shades - "grey" is a lighter, softer color, like fog, while "gray" is darker and harsher, maybe with a blue tint. That's entirely a personal idiosyncracy, though.
That staircase run always makes me nervous; precision jumps aren't my strong point. ("One thousand thousand slimy things" is a nightmare for me...)
