The Sentinels certainly are some amount of help, but I usually do a lot of the handiwork with my good old Plasma Pistol and Shotgun combo. In truth, the value of the Sentinels is mainly just providing support fire or distracting the enemy while you recharge your shields. Other than that, you're pretty much doing all the combat.
