I keep rereading these and now I am convinced (!!!) that the dream level sequence starting with Electric Sheep Three isn't a branching path, and just a dream sequence during our capture and stasis. Your point about willing us on is dead on, I think; "steps that falter fail" sounds like a reassurance. We're killing BoBs left right and center, smashing Durandal (our closest thing to a "friend" in this craphole universe) to bits, and perhaps considering hitting the ol' reset button and trying again.
But this time we're on the right path. I think the question of whether Durandal comes with us in the dream levels of Electric Sheep 3 is irrelevant, because By Committee is a direct continuation of Hang Brain. Tfear is pissed off that we destroyed Durandal and is torturing us to try to get at the information stored in our brain. Tycho has probably been demoted, or whatever you do to AI constructs that undermine your orders to capture important things.
Infinity IS fun.
