In Response To: Begging For Mercy... (PerseusSpartacus) : So how is there an 'AI core' aboard the ship? If there wasn't one there
: If Durandal didn't need an AI core, and there weren't any when the Sfiera
: Or is it an AI core at all? Part of the problem here is determining just what is meant by the word "core". Aside from the multiple real-world uses, the word has multiple and sometimes vague uses in the Marathon universe. In this specific case, I don't think it means anything other than the computer hardware on which Duranadal stores his data and runs his processes. Keeping that in mind, remember this from "Curiouser and Curiouser": The Pfhor computer was not truly self-aware and contained no information of value to us. Pfhor technology seems quite advanced, but their programmers must be incompetent. Leaving aside the possible insult to the S'pht, it's made clear that the Pfhor have access to hardware that they don't fully understand and are certainly not using to its full potential. It's seems pretty reasonable to assume this applies to ship computing systems as well. So, they've got this massive computing power on board Sfierra, but have no idea how to really use it other than for basic ship support systems. (Of course, one could argue humans weren't much better when they relegated Durandal to opening and closing doors.)
