I actually noticed when jumping back across the secret platform room in Unpfhorgiven that using the Flamethrower to propel yourself across seemingly prevented the goo from harming me, until I had to let off the trigger to get my guy back down to the right height. :P
Basically, pull the Flamethrower out, aim down, run forward, and fire her up before you even leave the walkway. Maybe then you'll evade death?
