On the subject of this level, I noted the following observation by young Perseus (in another forum post). I'm reprinting it here because it is relevant to the current discussion.
The other errors are slightly less glaring but nevertheless fairly obvious: many monsters that ought to appear on a level seemly aren't there. For instance, not a single one of the three switches on Couch Fishing was guarded whatsoever. The game seems to misread the placement data, or something of that nature.
This can actually happen in the original game. It's rare but it does happen. The number of Trooper placements on this level are greater than the number of Troopers placed by the engine at the start. So while there is a Trooper placement in front of each switch you might find all three filled, none filled or some combination. It leads to those heart pounding "Is there or isn't there a Trooper around the corner" moments. Also, if there are no Troopers at the start you are going to find them all at the end. ;)
This is lost in M1A1 as all Trooper placements are filled so no randomness.
