This is a run punch. It was first noticed shortly after the Marathon demo was released (Nov 1994). It was documented in the fan-made Marathon FAQ which came out at the end of Nov 1994. Most of this stuff is all gone now. Back in the day is was pretty common knowledge, so much so that few people bothered to document it. There is some mention of run punching in the Spoiler Guide (see the Arrival level). If you watch any of the films at the Vidmaster page you will see run punching in action. If you are using Aleph One only the M2 and Infinity films will work.
