Based on the corrected dates (Bungie's LNP) Bernard Strauss was not around at the time of the crash of Traxus IV in 2206. The only evidence we had that he was around at that time was the date (2208) in his log which was incorrect (changed to 2472). There is no evidence of him being in stasis between 2206 and 2472.
The simplest theory is that prior to the launch of the Marathon he was attempting to obtain the 'Holy Grail' of cybertonics, namely a stable Rampant AI. For reasons not quite clear he joins the Marathon as first science director and is placed in stasis for 300 years. He wakes up in the 28th century, a year before the Marathon arrives at Tau Ceti. Twenty-two years later he dies in the Pfhor attack on the Marathon.
I'd say he was in his seventies when he died. ;)
