You aren't kidding.
That little extra touch of smug asshole (and possible lunatic) made Durandal endearing. Also made him being your boss tolerable, somehow. I mean, when Tycho says Durandal is manipulating you, thinking of the version we've all come to "love" it almost feels like a joke. Durandal called you his slave, mentioned his goals of Godhood frequently, and even when he did a nice guy move, he pretended not to so he could be more of a jerk for his own amusement.
I suppose that's part of why he's likable. No tricks, no manipulation, no bribery, just straightforward slave driving and cruel sarcasm.
