Vid Boi, thanks for the tip about Danielewski's book. Yet more convenient is that I work in a used book store. I'm pretty sure we've got a copy on the shelf at the moment.

I'll add another book to the list: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon.
The plot details and intricate weaving of actual historic events into the fiction of the story is really well done.
