Yes, I know the Marathon Story Page timeline says otherwise. It's wrong. It says that because Tau Ceti in our universe isn't really 92 lightyears from Earth. But in the Marathon universe it is. Leela says so and we've no good reason to think she would directly lie to us about that.
Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. As to your actual question:

FTL travel. Marathon was sublightspeed, and by the time Durandal visited Earth between M1 and M2, he was teaching them about "warp capable fusion missiles", so he either gave them, or they already had, FTL (warp) technology by then.
It seems odd they hadn't already visited Tau Ceti again if they had developed FTL technology themselves, so I'm inclined to say that Durandal gave it to them.
The great irony of the properly adjusted dates above is that Leela's "warning" message arrives at Earth 5 years after the Pfhor system is sacked. If you think that's illogical, remember that Robert Blake & co went back to Earth in a Pfhor ship (which travels faster than light), and the S'pht'Kr also have FTL capability (their entire planet can warp around ferchrissakes), and besides, Durandal visited them after Marathon 1, probably to warn them about the Pfhor, so mankind saw the war coming from a decent ways away, even though Leela's message wasn't of any use.
And to think, if it weren't for Durandal, Earth would have been wiped out without any warning.
